On April 21, 2023, at the Roots Cafe, the KKV ‘ohana celebrated the retirement of Auntie Vailima Watson and her husband Coach Jerry. Their well-deserved retirement comes after more than four decades of serving KKV and the youth of Kalihi.

The celebration began with wonderful tributes from students, family members, and co-workers. Former students shared stories about Vailima and Jerry and the impact they had on their lives (see below for some of the video testimony). Many past students expressed how the tennis program shaped their lives and helped them through their teenage years. Dr. Derauf spoke about the couple’s legacy in the community, including how the pair brought health to Kalihi. The celebration ended with well wishes from community members and KKV staff.

Jesse Lipman, KKV’s Food Programs Coordinator, who helped plan the event, said, “We wish them all the best with more rest and time with their many grandchildren and family. Auntie Vailima is a true KKV Super Auntie and her work and love for the community have touched many of us, and while we will miss her regular presence, we are grateful for all she has given.”

Vailima and Jerry Watson’s KKV career began in 1975, serving at KKV’s—and Hawai‘i’s—first shelter for women and children. The pair went on to start KKV’s tennis program in 1990 at Kalihi Valley Homes. The program was the most popular out of the recreation programs created at the time. The program’s success came both on and off the court, keeping students healthy, active and engaged. Below, you’ll find video testimony to Vailima and Jerry, from students who have benefited from their love and care.

Mahalo nui Auntie Vailima and Coach Jerry for all that you have done for Kalihi! Best wishes on a well deserved retirement!
