Mahalo! Kahala Nui

Since 2010, the senior living center Kahala Nui has supported KKV’s Elder Care program with an annual donation through their Social Accountability Program set up through Aloha United Way. This past April, KKV’s Elder Care Director Merlita Compton accepted the award with a handful of other nonprofit leaders whose organizations provide services to seniors.

Funding this year means a great deal for our Elder Care program, which is focused on keeping Kalihi seniors healthy, active, and living at home. The COVID pandemic created many challenges for our kupuna who were often isolated for months at home. KKV provided a range of services from weekly phone check-ins, meal and produce deliveries, household supplies and food supplements. In the fall, Elder Care restarted its popular exercise program through telehealth, providing many of the seniors with connected devices and training so they can participate from home and maintain their social contacts with our program.

Kāhala Nui is widely viewed as the premier, Person-Centered Life Plan Community, located in Waialae-Kāhala. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, Kāhala Nui is owned by Kāhala Senior Living Community, Inc. and led by a voluntary board of directors.  Their Social Accountability Program assists seniors across Hawaii through annual contributions to partner organizations like KKV. Other community partners include the Alzheimer’s Association-Aloha Chapter, Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi, Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels, and Palama Settlement. Their aim is to support seniors and caregivers through education and training on topics such as self-care, elder abuse, prevention of senior fraud, fall prevention and advanced care planning.

“We are so grateful to Kahala Nui for their leadership and continued support for KKV’s Elder Care,” says Merlita who is well aware of the impact it has for the kupuna in Kalihi. “Our elders and caregivers continually express their gratitude for KKV’s Elder Care program. They tell us all the time how much more relaxed they feel knowing that we are there for them and how meaningful it is to have an opportunity to socialize with our staff and their friends at KKV.”
