A hui hou Farrington High School scholarship recipients!

For many years, the Kalihi Valley Community Foundation (KVCF) has supported the Akira Sakima Scholarship program for graduates of Farrington High School. Many of the students have close connections with KKV’s programs and staff. We are pleased to announce this year’s Akira Sakima scholarship recipients:

JOHN MICHAEL LAU CORPUZ

John plans to pursue a career in nursing and/or anesthesiology and is part of the KKV family as both a patient and the son of Sherry Corpuz who has worked at KKV since 2007. He has been working part-time to save for college and taking healthcare-related classes at Farrington’s Health Academy, such as Human Physiology and Clinical Health. John will attend Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU) in the Fall.

BENATHAN “BENOIT” SETIK

As a senior intern at KVIBE, Benoit was invited to join the NAKEM Leadership Institute (NLI) in order to grow his leadership skills and articulate his own stories. Through NLI, Benoit was able to travel to New Mexico to connect with other youths from around the continent. When the pandemic hit, Benoit started volunteering for KKV by helping Pacific Voices give out care packages in the KPT area. Then, KKV offered Benoit a position as a Hui Hoaka advocate doing outreach with KKV patients living in COVID-positive households. Benoit wants to continue his education so he can come back and serve his community to “show my other brothers and sisters in Kalihi that anything is possible...show them that college is not a place to be afraid of.” Benoit will attend Hawaiʻi Community College in the Fall.

JUSTUS ACOBA

Justus participated in KKV’s Waiwai Summer Program last July and has been a member of KKV’s Family Planning Services Community Participation, Education, and Project Promotion Committee for about two years. He is active in many clubs both inside and outside of school – one of which donated 100 masks to KKV for staff. Justus will attend Loyola University Chicago in the Fall.

ANCIANE CLAIRE MIGUEL

Anciane plans to pursue a career as a pediatrician. She is a junior coach for both KKV’s Youth Tennis Program and the Farrington High School Varsity girls & boys' teams. According to Vailima Watson, Tennis coach and coordinator, “Whatever she is involved in and does is beyond excellence...Anciane is the Future of KKV and All of Us.” Anciane will attend the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH Mānoa) in the Fall.
