Reflections from our Kupuna

“I would like to express my sincere admiration to KKV Elder Care Programs you provided to us Kupuna.

I am a widow, used to live in my daughter’s apartment. When everybody was out for work, I stayed alone in the house. That kind of routine made me weaker and sadder.

One day, KKV invited me to join the face-to-face exercise program. I was attending tthree times a week at KKV’s Gulick center. While joining the exercise, I gained my strength and gained new friends. But when the COVID-19 pandemic arose, the face-to-face exercise stop.

KKV’s Elder Care found a way to continue the Kupuna’s source of happiness. Now, we can do tele-exercise. Read more here…

Merlita Compton - KKV’s Kupuna Warrior & Elder Care Director

“I like it here at Gulick because I see people who need help and the love we share with them not only helps the individuals but also helps their families. If people are healthy, the community is healthy. That’s what community is for me.”

Speaking Many Languages - We Celebrate KKV’s Interpreters

“Interpreters are essential for providing great care at Kokua Kalihi Valley and are highly valued care team members. Many of the patients I care for speak limited or no english. Our interpreters provide voice for these patients and the communities they are a part of. Their patient, meticulous work helps me to clearly understand patient needs and the context of their lives. During the pandemic, interpreters have been especially critical in facilitating testing, care, vaccinations, and wrap around services. It is only because of their work and and the work of so many in the organization that we find success.” Dr. Nathan Tan, KKV Medical
