We are excited to share moʻolelo of Kalihi with the lāhui and the lehulehu and link here to an ongoing series posted to Instagram by Ho’oulu ‘Aina. Moʻolelo are central for our existence as a community, and sharing our stories builds collective mana. Boysie Burdett - February’s ‘Aina Warrior

Each month we are going to focus on someone from our staff or the community who reminds us about the inseparable connection between our health and the land. This month we are introducing Uncle Boysie who joined Ho’oulu ‘Aina as a temporary staff member in 2020.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA)!

This year's theme is "Water, "Nature's Drink". We at KKV Dental encourage all to make the simple swap from juice or soda to water to promote good general and oral health. We also want to remind parents that their children can avoid cavities by brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth daily, and eating a healthy diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks. Please come visit us for regular check-ups and preventive care for the whole family! Prevention and treatment of oral disease are the keys to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums!

“It has been an honor to make the Friday Mahalo Meal for our wonderful KKV staff over the past 5 months. What started out as a one-time thing became a weekly opportunity to keep our KKV food sharing tradition alive during the era of COVID. With all the limitations on life it was rewarding for our cafe to be able to put a smile on your faces every Friday (and save you some lunch money). As we move into 2021 Roots will be spending more time on our other programs, like getting the Kaluaopalena community garden ready for small (COVID sensitive) growing activities and reconnecting with our community partners who we didn't see much in 2020. As a result we will no longer be doing the regular weekly mahalo meal. However, we will continue to look for opportunities to share food with staff and may do an occasional mahalo meal (check your email). BIG THANKS to Izzi for collaborating on the weekly cooking, the farmers and friends who donated us ingredients, and to Toni, Shawn and other staff that went out of their way to acknowledge our kitchen crew and mahalo us back.” Jessie Lipman, Roots Cafe’

In 2021, KKV will present a series of programs around traditional carving and Pacific Island arts and culture at Ho’oulu ‘Āina through a grant from the National Endowments for the Arts. Read the national press announcement here.

Grants and donations make it possible for us to provide a rich array of services to Kalihi Valley, including care for 100 acres of land that provides a foundation for KKV’s ‘aina-based healing programs.
