KKV's
Health Education Department conducts both day and evening health education
classes at various convenient locations to members of the Kalihi Valley
community. While teaching on other health issues may also be conducted,
the core services presented include:
- Information
on early breast cancer detection and instruction on how to conduct
self breast examination for tumors
- Information
on sexually transmitted diseases
- Information
on safer sex and instruction on how to use a condom
During
2003, in
response to community need, the classes have been forcused mainly
on women's health issues. Merina Sapolu, Health Education Program
Coordinator, and other KKV staff conducted meetings with various groups
within the community to discuss and share information on reproductive
health and illnesses.

The
health educators worked with some of the churches in the area to bring
mothers and daughters together to share information about these issues.
In one of the churches, KKV partnered with the men, educating them
on women's health issues so they could encourage their mothers, wives,
aunties and grandmothers to participate in mammogram and pap smear
screenings.
Over
the past two years, KKV has been one of the most successful Breast
and Cervical Control Program sites in the State of Hawai'i in providing
Hawaiian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander, non-insured or under-insured
women with mammogram and pap smear screenings.
