           Kalihi Valley has over two times the number of limited English speakers as compared to both state and national averages (10.9% compared to 4.5% and 4.2%) and over three times the amount of households speaking a language other than English at home than national averages. Ninety-three percent (93%) of Kalihi Valley residents are of Asian or Pacific Island ancestry, 38% are foreign born and 23% live below the federal poverty level. According to the 2000 Census, people of Filipino ancestry comprise 54% of the Kalihi Valley population, followed by 12.8% Japanese, 11.5% Hawaiian, 6.1% Samoan, 5.1% Chinese and 4% from other Asian Pacific Islander (API) ancestry, with significant number of immigrants from Micronesia (Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau) Over 18% of KKV’s medical encounters are interpreted.  Representative of the community, KKV staff speaks 18 different languages.

 

 

Goals:

  • Increase the cultural and linguistic competence of health care workers serving Less English Proficient (LEP) communities in Kalihi Valley and throughout Hawaii
  • Increase the effective use of Maternal, Infant and Child Health Care Services at Kokua Kalihi Valley by LEP residents living in Kalihi Valley

 

 

CCB Program:

  • Provide Medical Interpretation training workshops for paraprofessionals at KKV and throughout Hawaii
  • Train KKV staff, Kalihi Palama Health center staff, DOH, Helping Hands Hawaii, PACT, Hanalike, Community Clinic of Maui and Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center to be trainers in Medical Interpretation through the nationally recognized leader in cultural competency trainings, the Cross Cultural Health Care Program
  • Conduct Cultural Competency and Working with Interpreters training workshops for health care providers at KKV and throughout Hawaii
  • Conduct culturally appropriate Community Health education workshops and Prenatal and Infant Care educational sessions for LEP Samoan, Filipino and Chuukese community members in Kalihi Valley
